Mail is simple and fast and the information generally uncluttered;
for most web
interfaces, the GUI gets in the way. Has the decision to change been
driven by
your manangement team or at the request of your clients?
A bit of both, there are certainly some customers / community members
advocating the adoption of forums. Our opinion is that forums are much
more accessible to casual users than the mailing lists and it *should*
be easier to find the answers you're looking for.
The rational for shutting down the mailing lists is to avoid forking
the conversation between mailing list users and forum users. This will
duplicate effort on our part and potentially make it harder for you to
track.
I'll take your feedback and see what can be done about improving our
forums. Adding email digest capabilities and improving RSS feeds makes
plenty of sense to me. I'll also make sure we re-visit the discussion
about mailing lists vs forums here at Opsview HQ.
