I prefer a mailing list too.
Forums aren't bad (as long as Google can index them), but I rather have a 
mailing list + a searchable web interface on the archive.

Would some form of email digest be a reasonable compromise?

If you want to vote for keeping the mailing lists, now is the time to
do it :) This is why we're giving you the heads-up.
Otherwise we'll assume that the silent majority are happy with the
changes we're proposing.
