Tom,
Not that I can remember. It only happened, like you said, if something was
physically wrong or something was wrong with the init file. The only time
where nothing was wrong with anything and it didn't come up that I can
remember is the 9i. Nothing wrong anywhere, just didn't come up.

Kevin,

of course, if there is an error in the init.ora file, the db won't start, or
if there is something wrong with the physical database, it will not start.

are you saying you've seen other problems where the db doesn't come up?

and as for the recently reported problem of the db on 9i not coming up, I
know this was a bug with 816 on w2k. I forget the resolution of that one...

Tom,
Usually I would agree with you on that one, most of the time it does
start.
But there are those occasions where the "service" will start, but then when
you go to connect to the db it says "Oracle not available" because of some
stupid error. So then you go with svrmgrl to find what in the hay is goin
on:)
Sincerely,
Kev

Scott,

you are absolutely wrong on this one. every database I am working with on
NT starts when the service starts. even without setting the AUTOSTART
param.

Kevin, Starting the NT service for the oracle instance
has never started the database in any version of
Oracle on NT by default. I think what you have seen
before is the use of the auto start service of the DB.
This service has a dependency to the SID service, so
when you start the SID service it would start the
database as well. This auto start and shutdown feature
can be configured through the oradim.exe command.

If you already have the SID service create then:

oradim -edit -sid test -startmode a -pfile
d:\ora901\database\init.ora

There is also a -startup option that will allow you to
specify the password.

Good Luck,

Scott
