Scott,

Having been recently introduced to the world of 
Oracle on NT, I can concur with that.  I haven't
tried 9i, but no version of oracle prior to that 
will automatically start by starting the service,
*unless* you take the trouble to setup the registry.

And even then there may be issues with startup.

At least the shutdown is working correctly.

For others reading this post:  if you have Oracle
on NT, go take a quick look at your alert logs.

Do you see 'crash recovery' in there?  If so, you 
better setup the registry correctly, as your database
is being shutdown in a manner harsher than shutdown abort.
