Suppose you have a database with a sid of mydb running on unix. Shutdown abort is like doing the following from the unix command line: ps -ef | grep mydb | grep -v grep | xargs kill -9. All the processes that make up the instance or processes that are connected to that instance are killed. The database will require instance recovery on the next start.
