Did you run the "scripts/start_over" script?  I believe this does most, if
not all that, and more.  It is really fairly good at the moment.

I always used mysql console to drop oscar dayabases and removed tmp
directory whenever I wanted to start afresh I guess this has created a huge
mess on my machine.

this demands a page at wiki for some do's and dont's for new developers
:)
