Well, you might want to look at Flex which also makes .swfs then for your Website development, it all depends on the kind of website you want to build. Flash is great for well, really flashy websites - annd it's metaphor of the timeline is what it is because it grew out of an animation tool. But you can also do neat flashy sites with Flex, though Flex is more for RIA type sites (Rich Internet Applications). You can use Flash without much use of the timeline to create sites too, if you learn enough Actionscript to do that.
