FLA files are the Adobe proprietary format binaries files created and
used by the Flash IDE, which is NOT free, to create swf files. The
primary use of the Flash IDE is to create timeline-based animations.
There are ways to create non-timeline-based animations in Flex.

When using Flex, look for Flex examples, not Flash examples. See:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex.
