otherwise), let's you read and/or update a .fla file?

I agree with you about dual nature of the Flash IDE.

Once people start creating components in Flex (either AS3 or MXML) for
use in Flash, the use of Flash may return to it's roots.  And remember
there's also "Thermo". It'll impact tool usage in an interesting way.
