Thanks, Diane, for your random comments. I have done some gatekeeping when doing other kinds of facilitation, but not in Open Space. I know there can be some inbalance when people from two very different cultures come together, or where there is a large perceived difference in power. I have not experienced the two-culture situation in Open Space, but OST seems to work just fine with the power differential. Most groups in Open Space do some gatekeeping within the group.
I think any of your guesses about the woman could be accurate--I'm inclined toward the theory that she likes facilitated meetings (someone else will take part of the responsibility). In a longer, offsite meeting, she would likely have found someone to talk with in a butterfly mode. Keeps life interesting. I have sometimes chatted on the sidelines with someone who was shy about voicing her ideas. But I was not inclined to go and fix it for her in the group.
