Thank you both for your input. It would seem the essence of the problem is that it is apparently no more than a dim phone, and Osmand has become too big for it. Perhaps, till she gets a smarter one, I'll un-install Osmand and find a smaller nav system. Or is there an older (smaller) version of Osmand *without bugs*, and where woudl I find it?
