When hiking, I'm a big fan of Custom Maps <http://www.custommapsapp.com/>, a labor of love from a Google developer, which allows you to georeference almost any online map, including PDFs, that you can download to your device. As well as photos of trailhead maps you take yourself. I often use in tandem with OsmAnd.
