Well I was hoping that the SSD would give me a lot more "speed" at
least for launching and switching between apps and for short writes -
and that this might even compensate a little for RAM shortages if the
VM swaps were dramatically faster - but this latter might be the
ravings of a naive loon.

Wouldn't consider an SSD as a TM back-up volume, or a destination
volume for the output of scripted manipulations of large files, but
that's not what I'd be doing on this machine. More the usual light mix
of laptop stuff: mail, web, editing of small files, a bit of iTunes, a
bit of iPhoto and a lot of DVD watching on planes and trains. (The
latter, together with the RAM ceiling, being that which is gently
pulling me away from an Air.)
