Something to be said for that Air FOrce Academy training, I guess.
Truly remarkable and simply heroic. Not something we see a lot of in
the news these days.

I am reminded of an incident about 10 years ago where I was nearly
involved in a very serious accident. A car crossing at a diagonal to
me ran a red light and hit a VW microbus head on (offset) causing the
car to barrel-roll and land about 10 feet in front of me.

The microbus was pretty banged up (nothing compared to the other car)
and the driver's side had buckled in. Amazingly, the driver was
uninjured, but the car had bent in so far that his leg was stuck. No
broken bones, no cuts, but he couldn't get his leg out.

Did I mention the gas?

Oh, right, the VW was also spewing gas. Some, initially, into the
air, and then just a gushing rush of gasoline covering the whole
street around the VW.

Several of us hopped out of our cars, grabbed tire irons (and one a
mini sledge from his truck) and there was a second, but only a second,
where we all paused and looked at the gas, looked at each other, and
shrugged. We ran in, beat on the car enough to pry some metal a
significant fraction of an inch, and got the driver out.

Now, I was probably not as worried as most people as I know that
gasoline is not quite as combustible as the movies would have you
believe (and errant match or cig was not going to light it) but still,
there was a risk, and yet there was no question.

This is the same reason that I like blizzards. The fact is, people are
generally pretty damn cool when the chips are down, even if they are
complete and total assholes the rest of the time.
