Is there a reason not to hang a 1TB off the back of the iMac and share
it to the MacBook? That's by far the cheaper solution.
Otherwise, you're looking at something Drobo-like and you'll be
thinking £200 for a 500MB isn't too bad (although I got a USB drive
and slapped it on my Airport Extreme base-station for a cheaper
version).
In fact, that's my recommendation for a Mac-only system: Airport
Extreme and a large external USB drive.
