I'm not sure. The closest I can think of is the difference between a being poked with a pin and a knee jerk deep tendon reflex test. One is painful, the other isn't, but both will exhibit a response in the subject. In fact, in most people the tendon test evokes a much greater response than being pricked with a pin, yet is far less painful.
