There is a difference between base response and enough awareness to  
actively avoid painful situations based on prior experience.  I take  
it that they measured the latter.

The end is BS.  When it comes to survival things live and things  
die.   There is nothing humane really about this fact.  It is life.   
To stop eating shellfish because it hurts when they die is silly.   We  
might as well stop eating altogether.
