Dear
Suzanne,
to
suggest that cognition is not the domain of occupational therapy let alone, the
sole domain of any particular profession is absurd.
Cognitive capacity is required for all purposeful activities to occur,
the planning, initation, continuance, sequencing and termination of stages in
such activities. Many professions require a knowledge of these capacities and so
some generic knowledge occurs and is essential for team working and a consistant
approach. The majority of OT models and frameworks use cognitve capacities in
some way for understanding, assessing and treatment of dysfunction. An
individuals ability to function is said to primarily be determined by the
ability to process new information and occupational therapy seeks to stimulate,
treat and assess by using media, training, adaptation and other treatment
methods to introduce such information.
I
beleive you should question your collegues judgement on this one and perhaps
seek assistance/information from your professional body (e.g. BAOT, AFOT
etc.).
Good
Luck
JON
