Dear Fellow OTs:
My opinion on splinting is that it has its place in OTs profession. Splinting in OT as most of us know are is done for various reasons and can certainly be linked to the individual performance. Splinting can be done in prepping healing tissues after repairs for tendon, nerve, ligament, congential deformity, etc. After this period the limb is re-introduced to use in ADLs. In nursing homes-splinting maintains skin integrity, minimize contractures, helps with bed positioning and other things. These areas influence performance and psychosocial issues(which OT is aware of). I do not want to give a seminar, sorry. Splinting in the different areas of OT services is appropriate and I am shocked that we are questioning its relevance. OTs look at the individual wholisticly(at least that is what I have learned in 12 years of practice).
There are many things we do that at times cause the profession to confuse our identity. Please go back to the frames of reference you learned in OT school and you will not question your role's uniqueness as well as your talents.
