Mr. Lehman,

Since there is so much confusion about defining OT and PT, do you have a quick and easy definition of both that students and practicing therapists can use to explain each discipine as well as the difference between the two without being too vague such as AOTA's slogans such as "Skills for the job of living."?

I am a COTA who works in a skilled nursing/subacute rehab facility and I feel that overall, public awareness of OT is improving.  After the OTR/L has evaluated the patient and the patient is added to my caseload, I try to give a good explanation of what occupational therapy is, and I try to help the patient define their occupations.  For the most part, in this setting, basic ADL's, basic kitchen/home management/DME recommendations and training are addressed and then they are out the door to their home or assisted living facility.

>sometimes i think it is less ignorance and more confusion.......thank the theorists for that one. I was tearing my hair out with all the definitions of what OT actually is!. I totally agree with your comment about no matter who we are or what we are. However, this is what you get with professionalism unfortunately.

>I teach both PTs and OTs and to me the ignorance starts there......OT students do not even know what OT really is and the same goes for PT students.......how many times one will realize the difference, then want to change from one to the other.....I am interested to hear from some of those who have BOTH degrees.....education, yes, is the key....as well as either waiting for the "old school" to die off or ?
