'New Message' shows the agent that the last article isn't from the agent -=> the agent needs to do something (set a pending time, reanswer, ...). IMO a 'Mark as Read' button would be wrong because the agent needs to do something. Anyway, maybe the 'unread/read' state for the queue view would be a nice feature!?
