Martin,
Because the Desktop is "just another folder in your Home folder" you could also navigate to your Home folder (Shift-Apple-H, or choose Home from the Go menu in the Finder), then double click on the Desktop folder, then you can view as a list or whatever to see the Desktop items inside the window - this can be very handy, especially for periodical clean outs of the Desktop.
Although your problem is already solved, I thought it worthwhile pointing out the folder nature of the Desktop as many people use it in that way at times when they get used to Mac OS X and the Home folder.

Sounds like the installer put an icon on your desktop which has been
positioned on the bottom edge of your screen and hence behind the dock.
Try hiding teh dock (Apple menu => Dock => turn hiding on and see if
you can then grab the icon and put it somewhere else.
