Because the Desktop is "just another folder in your Home folder" you could also navigate to your Home folder (Shift-Apple-H, or choose Home from the Go menu in the Finder), then double click on the Desktop folder, then you can view as a list or whatever to see the Desktop items inside the window - this can be very handy, especially for periodical clean outs of the Desktop.
Although your problem is already solved, I thought it worthwhile pointing out the folder nature of the Desktop as many people use it in that way at times when they get used to Mac OS X and the Home folder.
