Using a floppy drive with OS X is fraught with difficulties. Do not use the eMac to format the disks. Use only 1.4Mb HD disks as the generic USB external floppy drives do not, and never have recognised Apple 400k or 800k disks. I'm pretty sure they would not even recognise 720k DOS disks either. The only purpose for using a floppy disk drive with OS X is to get files from an older Mac or from a PC from a suitable cross-platform application, M$ Word, Excel and Powerpoint for example, but also FileMaker Pro, Photoshop and other Adobe products, etc. That is, to save the files to the eMac and work on them. You can transfer the files back to a PC or older Mac (with a Superdrive, i.e. 1.4Mb). An older Mac with a Superdrive can also format and copy 800k disks so you can transfer back to a Mac Plus if you need to as well. > >there is no ethernet port on the powermac. > >is there a solution ? I assume you mean a 5500/225 Power Mac; one of the all-in-one boxes <http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/5500.shtml>. There is an ethernet card that fits into the PCI-comm slot - I'm fairly sure that I have at least one in the accumulated Mac stuff stored in the garage. Let me know off-list if you need one. It is recognised by the System install disk, and depending upon which System you are running on the old Mac it will use Open Transport and allow connection through a hub to the eMac. I've never tried a cross-over cable for a direct connection, but that *should* work too. > >googling leads me to believe that the usb diskette >drives or os x itself will only recognise later >diskette formats and not 800k or dd diskettes.
