I had similar problems with the Linux 2.6 kernel's USB driver and the DS9490. I was really pouring through the code, and it was getting data errors from the USB. On a whim, I tried it with a 2.4 kernel, and it worked perfectly.
When experiencing the 2.6 kernel problems, it looked like the 1-wire devices "came and went" from the filesystem. One second there were there, the next, they were gone. So, if you're using a 2.6 kernel, try a 2.4 kernel! It works really well.
