The battery backup explains the persistent counter values and the large
counts.

I now wonder about the 0x04 in the next, supposedly zero field, in your
example. Perhaps the counters actually are more than 4 bytes and this is the
high-order byte. Usually the counts wouldn't go this high before a reset, so
the field was never tested. The datasheet says nothing about higher order
fields.

Someone is kindly sending me a DS2423 counter device. I'll test this
hypothesis.

I presume we'd want the full resolution ( >32bits) reported if it exists.
