I'm no expert but from what I read in "Guidelines for Reliable Long Line  
1-Wire® Networks" the best solution is to split in the middle.
I think the problem with uneven legs is the reflections form the end of  
the cable arrive in different time.

However I have very "ugly" star with different legs at my home and it  
works fine. It's maybe about 30 meters of wire.
