Dear List,
While I am an avid reader of the list, I am a less prolific contributer but
here goes. I am a little embarrassed to admit I don't quite remember how
the topic of spirituality and religion came up, so excuse me if some of my
thoughts are a little off the mark.
I am a Christian. I don't go to church, I don't go to confession, and I
don't take communion, but I still consider myself to be a Christian and a
spiritual person. I spent 18 months working in Saudi Arabia. During my
orientation there I was given some advice which sustained me through some
very difficult times where I was challenged by different philosophies and
beliefs. That advice was "It's not right, it's not wrong, it's just
different."
While I was there met women who were obviously in violent relationships, and
others where there was just as obvious an affectionate bond within the
marriage. Kind of like here really. Religion is not to fault for the
treatment of people - the responsibility for the treatment and mistreatment
of all creatures on this earth lies with the people and animals who inhabit
it.
I now work in a large maternity hospital, and each day I face a situation
where I find myself thinking "It's not right , it's not wrong, it's just
different". The same things happens when I read the contributions from the
list. I believe that I have become very accepting and respectful of the
differences which make us all individuals.
I'm not really sure how to end this except to say, you may agree with me,
you may disagree with me, it doesn't matter, because as an individual I have
the right to be right, the right to be wrong, and the right to be different.
Regards,
Janelle Laws
