I also doubt whether it's only health workers who desire more
medicalization of childbirth; many women who have their babies where
I work (tertiary public hospital) actively seek out the medical
model and loudly advocate as much intervention as they can get.
These are not necessarily ignorant women either, they are educated,
articulate women. As this hospital has a policy, for example, of
advocating VBAC wherever possible, a policy pushed as much by drs as
midwives, there is not infrequently difficulty with women in the
clinics and the labour ward who adamantly do NOT want to labour
again and feel much aggrieved at having their considered choice
taken away. I am not supporting this just putting the situation to
the list because I think its important to realize that the community
as a whole doesn't always have the same objects in view that we
have. I don't like interfering in our bodies' amazing ability to
bring forth new life but I also am conscious of "you can choose
whatever you want as long as it's what I want you to do," something
I witness as often now as I did as a new midwife 20 yrs ago but with
different points of discussion.
