Hi Jo,
I am not a midwife so cannot comment on whether amniotomy may have caused the problem of posterior position although in my personal experience the labour I had where I did not have my waters (3rd) broken was much quicker than the one where they were broken (2nd). During my 2nd labour I was told my son was posterior after the waters were broken (at my request as I thought it would speed things up after 15hrs in labour) although I had no back labour either. Straight after my waters were broken my dilation actually reversed (7cm back to 4/5cm) and I stayed there for the next 8 hours. I spent a lot of time leaning forward over a chair in the shower and over the bed and sometime before my 2nd stage my son turned. Prior to my labour where the waters were not broken my baby was very mobile from posterior to anterior. I have no idea what position she was in during the labour, again I stayed in the leaning forward position as much as possible and she wa! ! s born anterior as well.
I don't see that you could have done anything else and it sounds like you gave your friend wonderful support. If she does seem to be becoming a little upset about the csec (it took me 12wks before I became really upset and angry about mine after my 1st child) then put her in contact with Birthrites Healing After Caesarean at http://birthrites.edsite.com.au/
