Hi all, It's quite possible I'm a complete idiot but after struggling for some time with backup errors about missing feature XML files, I had a revelation...and thought I'd be silly enough to share it with you all.
The feature.xml file was indeed missing because the feature it referred to was not installed on the Central Administration server I was running stsadm on. It then occurred to me...what if I try running it on one of the WFEs where the feature IS installed. Hey presto! Well you learn something new every day don't you? At least I do. :) OK. Yes.
