Hi Paul,

These features were deployed to all content web apps. I wasn't trying to
deploy/retract, just run backup from stsadm.

I find it absolutely freaking nuts that in order to perform this backup job I
had to run it from one of the front ends, and not from CA server where I
usually perform all my stsadm operations.

Is this by design or is my farm just farked? :)

Or is it that a 'backup' operation actually includes the physical files from
the server?

Paul

Features depend on scope... if they are only site related, then you can only
use them on the site they are deployed to. Only global features let you use
them everywhere and in most cases my features are not global. Global features
cause an IISReset on all servers in the farm when deploying/retracting...

Hi all,

It's quite possible I'm a complete idiot but after struggling for some time
with backup errors about missing feature XML files, I had a revelation...and
thought I'd be silly enough to share it with you all.

The feature.xml file was indeed missing because the feature it referred to was
not installed on the Central Administration server I was running stsadm on.

It then occurred to me...what if I try running it on one of the WFEs where the
feature IS installed. Hey presto!

Well you learn something new every day don't you? At least I do. :)

OK. Yes. I am an idiot.
