I know what you mean.

When I write stuff, I generally try to avoid trademarks entirely.  In this
case, you can probably describe the entire operation with only generic
nouns and verbs:  "Synchronize your organizer with your desktop computer"
or "Synchronize to copy your data from the desktop to your handheld."

Sadly, "connected organizer" is, as far as I know, the best generic noun
that describes what a Palm brand device is/does for the general public.
PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) is the only other one I've heard generally
used.

If you really want to solve this problem, you'll probably have to invent a
new generic noun for the whole class of handheld computing devices!
...other than "Palm PCs" of course. :)
