My memory isn't quite what it used to be, so someone please correct me if
I'm wrong, but I believe in version 1.0 of HotSync, the Unique IDs would
change so it wasn't a reliable form of record id. I believe this has since
been fixed for versions above 1.0.
To take the guess work out of the whole thing, I generated and managed my
own unique ids.
