You didn't specify you wanted to use additional hardware.  If you make your
own hardware, you can do just about anything.
Like I said, the hotsync button is a hardware interrupt.  Attach your IR
hardware modem and you can access the interrupt.  Your modem is the one that
then stays awake looking for another IR device.
If you want to just the use the internal IR port, you're out of luck.
