If you get to Washington DC, visit the National Gallery of Art I saw paintings that I had only seen in books and the difference between a photo of the art and the actual paintings was mind boggling! And see the Smithsonian museums, 19 seperate museums all around Washington DC with all the best samples of history the World has to offer.

Try 66, or any of the interstates and get off whereever you see an interesting city name. History? Well, you'll have to do some research into what you're looking for. We're not Europe, but we're older than you guys. :D Government/Monuments/museums? Washington DC is the place to be, although NYC has a great selection of museums. I don't know what you like to build, but I'm an air fan and I love the air museums in Tucson, Seattle, Dayton, and of course DC. And there's the Intrepid on the west side of Manhattan.
