And ..., the sale of Bodmer papyri, perhaps oddly enough, made the
"local" headlines also last March and April in Birmingham, Alabama,
USA -- thanks to the journalist Greg Garrison. See, for example,
_The Birmingham News_ of 2 March, 2007, p. 1H ("Gift of the
Gospels / Local pastor helps Vatican get ancient manuscripts") and
10 March, 2007, p. 1D ("Religion scholar calls claims phony"). This
was also taken up by a couple of news services (e.g.: the Religion
News Service -- "Gospels Returned to Vatican by Way of Christie's
and Alabama"). The story is lent somewhat the tone of a thriller,
but more importantly : the whole affair is given a *positive*
flavor*, quite contrary to the negative tone among papyrologists,
for instance on this discussion list.

Who's right ??? (loaded question)

Are formulations like "a nightmare" (Barker), "still safely in Cologny/
Geneva" (Schubert) and "learn the lesson and try harder" (Hurst)
not, in a broader context, somewhat incommodious ? Why do I
seem to be sniffing that "hortus inclusus"-aroma again here ?

- Laval Hunsucker, UvA

* E.g.: "Donohoe said he felt that the Vatican Library would be the best
place to preserve the Bodmer papyri of Luke and John as well. 'The
scholars who have a legitimate need for research will be able to see it,'
he said. 'It's like bringing it home.'" ; "'This is without question one of
the most valuable Christian manuscripts now in the possession of the
Vatican,' said Krupp" ; "'It was a remarkable, holy experience for all
of us,' Donohoe said."
