The boombox is a streamlined system with its own speakers. They cannot be spread apart, though. But for the sake of portability it is great. The XM receiver snaps into the cradle in between the speakers and you can use the remote that came with the home kit. In the boombox, the up and down station select becomes the volume control. There is a volume control knob on the boombox itself. There is an earphone jack. Sorry, no line-ins or outs. If you wanted to record from it, you would have to amplify it through another amplifier and crank it up quite high. It uses six D batteries. Good when the power is out. I don't really know how long they last. Downside, the adapter for the boombox is bulky and heavy, heavier than the one for the home kit. It plugs into a jack on the boombox behind the left speaker. The antenna wire can be wrapped around posts inside the boombox just behind the battery compartment and one of the posts is hollow and has a connection for the antenna. The rest of the antenna device is snapped onto the back of the boombox and held snugly in place. The handle is recessed, great for people with small hands to grab but a nuisance for someone with large hands. Sounds great, not too bassy and simple to operate. It does not matter where you put the boombox, the signal comes through fine. I guess I have big windows at my place even though they face west. Reception is wonderful. I know everybody insists on that south-facing window. Perhaps where there is too much metal, tree cover, and the like, and other obstructions, satellite radio canot function. I learned that the hard way when I was in a place with lots of tree cover. Since my sighted friends do not have satellite radio or dish, even, they could not tell me that.
