My only take on this one is that flat panel speakers are very likely of poorer sound quality the larger models.
As it happens I use an external amp and speakers on the machine I'm writing this on which is set up for audio and uses a M Audio Delta soundcard and I get very good sound from this set up, both in recording and playback.
