High Chris,
I think I know what Tom is getting at here.
Some how, he is getting in inaccurate reading of his battery life or the kind of charge he has left in it after a time. If the player isn't playing a book, then it's suppose to turn itself off after a half-hour.
But Tom's player doesn't do that.
I spoke to a Mr. Dave Bond via email at the Bard Talk website about this problem.
He says, that maybe the battery checks are messed up.
He suggested that Tom calls his cooperating library and ask them to send hem a replacement NLS player. But to me, it sounds like something is wrong with the program or if you will, the firmware that's on that particular machine.
Maybe the firmware needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled.
But there isn't anything that suggest how to go about doing that to one of these players. Tom, if you're reading this, you may wish to call your library and tell them about the problem you're experiencing with your player.
Maybe they mite have a suggestion for you on what you can do about it.
My best regards.
 John.

I may be missing your point since you didn't include the message you're
responding to, but my understanding of how the NLS player works, and the way I want it to work, is that if I'm listening to a book then I want it to play until I turn it off or I enable the sleep mode. I don't want it to shut off every 30 minutes. Jus because I'm not pressing a button. If I pause a book,
pull out the cartridge, ..., but leave it on then I want it to shut off
after 30 minutes, which I think it does.
