Thanks for your help, but I resolved all this some days ago with a 
suggestion from someone named Barry and the help of my program CDex. Not 
such a hassle as I'd feared.

Here, you can download a program called: meow multi sound converter.  You
can convert audio files to different formats, as well as converting from
stereo to mono, or mono to stereo.. I use it all the time, and I find it to
be  speech friendly! Hope this will help you.
