Don't know where you got that from, Reaper supports all platforms and I'm using it here on Mac and under Windows.
Why should you pay? Well you don't have to if you don't want the product and that's entirely up to you but comparing Audacity to Reaper is like comparing Apples to Oranges as they're totally different. Now for those who are considering the purchase of Reaper - when I purchased a licence - it was $50.00 and that licence covered multi platforms.
