I've got 2 SCA 7200 RPM Seagate 9.1 GB drives in an 8600 (running on the
Mac-flashed, formerly PC, Adaptec 2940 card). They are formatted as 1 volume
with Soft RAID 2.2.

The machine will not boot from them during a cold boot with the original HD
still connected to the internal motherboard SCSI. It *will* boot from them
if that drive is disconnected. They do not spin up fast enough to be
recognized otherwise, even if the RAID volume is selected in the Startup disk
control panel.

It will also restart from them, whether the original HD is connected or not,
so long as they haven't spun down. It may be (longshot, maybe) that some of
these "non-bootable" drives are in fact bootable if the older, faster to spin
up drives are unplugged from the SCSI.

I'm not sure how the 80-->50 pin adapter scenario might differ from my
80-->68 pin set-up though. I've gathered from others that the termination
provided by some of the SCA-->50 pin adapters is not always adequate. I'm
using unterminated adapters with an active terminator on the ribbon cable.

Perhaps someone knows specifically what type (terminated or not) of
SCA-->50 pin adapter is preferred for Mac mobo SCSI ?
