The empty ROM slots on Macs were intended to be used to support ROM updates.
Apple never shipped one, so the slots stand empty. Excess dust bunnies in
that slot could cause a problem, but as long as it is reasonably clean you
are fine.

Very early production often uses "UV erasable" EPROMs (usually eight) rather
than "mask programmed" ROMs (usually four), in a ROM SIMM [ * ].

Early production usually uses mask-programmed ROMs, also in a ROM SIMM.

General availability production uses soldered, mask-programmed ROMs, usually
identical to the early production ROMs.

Late production often leaves out the ROM SIMM socket entirely.

If your machine doesn't use a ROM SIMM, there's no reason to muck with the
ROM SIMM socket at all.

[ * ] Most notable: any "six slot" PCI Mac.
