You must not use TEXTEDIT. It crashes if you look at it wrong. I code by hand and need a good plain text editor and SIMPLE TEXT is more hardy on OS 9 for now. The workflow goes faster with popup tabs at the bottom of my screen as well. I have never had a crash like that, but this OS X is so fragile it's amazing.
