I replaced the PRAM battery in my 8600/300 and all is fine. But now as it starts the boot process, it makes a sound like breaking glass and then boots fine.
The hardware self-check during boot reports with various sounds.
The bong means everything passed. A thud is a processor failure. A chord is one kind of memory failure (not the first DIMM).
