Update on my SanDisk USB card reader problem.... The only thing that
"worked" was to get NEW drivers off the SanDisk site, something I
should've thought of right away.

Unfortunately, this reader does not seem to work with the newer cards,
and I had purchased a SanDisk 256MB CF card, and it works fine in
my digital camera, but the SanDisk reader won't read it: the cards
were upgraded. SanDisk would replace the card, except that I bought
it from some guy on eBay who's not an authorized SanDisk seller,
so... I wasted a few bucks on the reader.

The tech support gentleman at SanDisk said that the new USB 2.0 readers
are backwards compatible on my USB 1.1-reading Mac; it just won't
perform at the new higher speed.

Does this seem right?

Yes this is correct. I'm using a USB 2.0 reader on my 9600 with a 1.1 interface right now. Look for a media reader that support USB Mass Storage standard, and you can use if with the included drivers in USB for OS 8.6 and later.

You have to recognize that every out-front maneuver you make is going to be
lonely. But if you feel entirely comfortable, then you are not far enough
ahead to do any good. That warm sense of everything going well is usually the
