and there is no master slave setting in scsi 's is there ?
some old fireballs did not have any switchable scsi id, they were all set to 0, if you fit a scsi in the second scsi slot it will work - but that slot (the external scsi chain) is a bit slower, so don't put the startup disk on that one.
