Nathan,
A couple of more thoughts........

There is a hacked version of Apple's Drive Setup floating around the net
that some people have had success with on non-Apple drives. I tried it once
a while ago with no luck so I went back to FWB. You may want to google for
it, I can't find it in my bookmarks.

Do you know what's on the drive ? I have seen drives formatted with x86 Unix
utilities that had to be put back into the intel machine, reformatted for
DOS, and only then it could be formatted to HFS+.

More likely your problem is:

If your Apple drive was formatted on an ATA card. Try putting it back in the
8600, initialize it there and them move it to the new G3. Or move the ATA
card to the G3. I bet it will be recognized with the ATA card. The G3 will
be a lot faster with the ATA card also. The IDE bus on beige G3's is pretty
slow.

It sounds like you may have some problems with your IDE bus in your G3. If
you have an ATA card, stick it in the G3 and be done with it. You also have
an internal SCSI bus in your beige G3 that is intended for a Zip drive but
can be used for SCSI HDD's also.

Here's a site every G3 owner should read through:
