Hi all,
Try pulling your second video card and see if the problem goes away. If so,
you may try moving the video card to another PCI slot. I haven't moved mine
yet, but it will be time to play PCI card roulette soon.
Ron, your advice of moving around PCI cards worked: I'we just swapped the positions of two video cards, and now the Restart is back to functional life :-)
Well, actually it's only a partial success. Now, whenever I boot, after the startup sequence has completed, a message pops up: "Apple Monitor Plugins didn't load correctly. This monitor is not supported by Apple Monitor Plugins current version" (this is a translation - the actual message is in Italian). That's weird, because before the swap all was working perfectly (I didn't change anything but physical positions in PCI slots). What's more, when I moved the cards back to their original position, the Restart command didn't work (as expected), but that message unexpectedly showed up as well! I trashed all the monitor-related preferences I could find and fiddled around with panels and extensions, to no avail: the message always appears at the end of the startup sequence, just after the Finder has loaded.
I've moved again the cards to the new position, anyway... discovering another problem: whenever I restart, I loose the three bottom PCI slots (they don't show in the Apple System Profiler). I have (again) to shut down, then to power up, and the PCI slots come back to life.
Now I ask: does anyone here has a PM9600 or 9500 with all six PCI slots populated and working flawlessly?
For your information, my PM9600 is configured as follows:
- 704MB RAM, virtual memory not active, 512KB hard disk cache set in the Memory control panel (I need it this low because I use Cubase VST 5.1)
- one 9GB and one 18GB SCSI (partitioned into two 9GB volumes) hard drive
- stock Apple CD reader, stock internal Iomega Zip, stock floppy drive
- PCI A1: VillageTronic MP540 video card
- PCI B1: VillageTronic 3D Overdrive + Paloma (linked to the MP540)
- PCI C1: ATI Radeon 7000 PCI video card
- PCI D2: Yamaha SW1000XG + PLG150-VL audio card
- PCI E2: Yamaha AX16-AT audio card
- PCI F2: Yamaha DS2416 audio card (the three Yamaha cards are linked together)
- one Yamaha AX44 I/O unit residing in the bottom 5 1/4" bay, linked to the DS2416
I use three monitors: two Apple Studio Display 15" LCD VGA (B/W) and one Apple Studio Display 15" LCD DVI (Graphite).
Currently the PM9600 features its stock 604ev/300MHz processor, but I've already bought that Sonnet Crescendo G4/700 upgrade, which I should get within next week - and I hope this upgrade won't cause further headaches!
By the way, now I use Mac OS 9.1, but on another partition there is the Mac OS 9.2.2 I was using before migrating to this 9.1 in order to use the forthcoming Sonnet G4/700 card, which I understand is NOT compatible with 9.2.2 - do I understand right?
As usual, thanks to all for the feedback :-)
